What 14ct means

Carats count gold in 24ths, and the UK hallmark shows it in parts per thousand. 14ct gold is hallmarked 585, which means at least 585 parts in every 1,000 are pure gold. The rest is other metals that make it harder and change its colour.

A UK hallmark has three compulsory marks: the sponsor's (maker's) mark, the fineness mark such as 585, and the mark of the assay office that tested it. Hallmarks explained

The figures here are the value of the pure metal at today's spot price. Anyone who buys your gold has to melt and refine it and make a margin, so their offer will be below this. Offers vary between buyers, which is why it's worth getting more than one quote and comparing them with the offer checker.
