How we calculate the prices

Every number on this site comes from a stated source and a simple formula, so you can check it.

The formula

  1. We take the spot price of gold, silver, platinum and palladium in US dollars per troy ounce from MetalCharts.
  2. We convert it to pounds using the latest US dollar to pound rate from Frankfurter.
  3. We divide by 31.1034768 g, the troy ounce as defined in the Weights and Measures Act 1985, to get the price of one gram of pure metal.
  4. For each purity we multiply by its fineness: for example 0.375 for 9ct gold and 0.925 for sterling silver, from the UK hallmarking standards.

Prices update every 4 hours. If a source returns a value that is clearly wrong, we keep the last good price rather than show it.

What the prices are, and aren't

They are the value of the metal content at the spot price. They are not what a shop charges for jewellery, and not what a buyer will pay you: buyers' offers are lower, and jewellery prices include making and retail costs.

We are independent. We don't buy or sell gold or silver, and no buyer pays to appear on this site. If we ever add links to dealers, they'll be clearly labelled.
